Learning Centre

The Learning Centre is part of the Shetland Library service, providing access to the People's Network.  This is a national initiative, bringing computer access to everyone via a network of public libraries.  The Centre is housed in a beautifully restored church hall, next door to the main library building at Lower Hillhead, Lerwick.  The calm surroundings are perfect for both study and leisure. What's in the Learning Centre?

  • Free access to one of 16 bookable PCs - telephone 01595 743875 to reserve a computer

  • Free Internet access

  • Access to web-based e-mail e.g. Hotmail

  • Microsoft Office software compatible with systems used in local colleges, e.g. Word and Excel

  • Printing - both black & white and colour (10p and 20p per sheet)

  • Colour scanner including photo negative scanner

  • Access to subscription-based web sites, e.g. KnowUK and Britannica Online

  • Computer books and learning packs
  • Foreign language learning packs and fiction
  • A range of feature films based on classic and popular novels, foreign language films, classics and musicals
  • There is no charge to borrow any of these materials

CDs, DVDs, floppy disks and USB (flash) drives are available for sale in the Learning Centre. Please save all files to removable storage devices and not to the PCs or network drive. Headphones are also available for sale, or you can bring your own if you wish to listen to audio on the computers.
