Shetland Library has developed a collection of high quality online resources which are only available to subscribed users.
The following subscription services are available from any public access computer within library or school sites, and can also be accessed from any other computer which has Internet access. These sites provide access to online editions of many popular reference books, newspapers, images and multimedia resources.
To use these sites outwith the library, you will need your library barcode number, which is the number on the reverse of your library card. If you have any difficulties in using these resources, please contact the library and we will try to help.
KnowUK is
an online service developed to provide UK reference information.
It is the most comprehensive resource of its kind, offering a complete
library of UK information. KnowUK makes life easier, cutting
out information overload and providing authoritative and current
information. Know UK provides access to many popular UK reference books including directories eg. the Directory of Grants and Funds in Scotland, the Writer's and Artist's Yearbook, UK tourist guides eg. the Blue Guides Scotland/England/Wales/Ireland, and biographies eg. Who's Who? and the Concise Dictionary of National Biography.
If you are a member of Shetland Library, you can access KnowUK outwith the library from any computer by clicking on the library barcode link on the KnowUK homepage, then typing in the number on the back of your library card.
NewsUK is an online searchable database, allowing cross-searching of 67 national and regional newspapers, providing a broad range of views and opinions on a particular news story. News Topic pages also provide background reading on contemporary issues.
The online edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica for all ages, providing comprehensive, authoritative information on nearly every subject. If you are a member of Shetland Library, you can access Britannica outwith the library by typing in the number on the back of your library card in the login page.

World Data Analyst is now available through the Britannica Online site. The link is under the features section at the bottom of the homepage. You will need to be a member of Shetland library to access this site outwith the library - type in the number on the back of your library card on the login page.
Original Sources provides access to books and documents produced by some of the greatest minds throughout history. Contains over 5,000 complete books and 350,000 documents covering areas such as World History, Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, Philosophy and Religion.
If you are a member of Shetland Library, you can access Original Sources outwith the library using your library barcode number by going to the Original Sources Remote Log in page.
Oxford
Reference Online brings together language and subject reference
works from one of the world's biggest reference publishers into
a single cross-searchable resource.
Contains bilingual dictionaries in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Latin as well as titles from the popular Oxford Companian series and dictionaries covering many subjects eg Science, History, Religion, Politics etc.

Scran is part of the Scran Trust - a registered charity - whose aim is to provide educational access to digital materials.
The learning image service hosts over 300,000 images, movies and sounds from museums, galleries, archives and the media. It can be used generically - as a substitute for clip art - or for particular learning applications.
So, if you need a picture of a tiger, Charlie Chaplin, Sean Connery, a Degas, a Dali, images of war or whaling, standing stones, a pint of beer, an integrated circuit, or line drawings of an acorn or an adrenal gland - to name a few - try Scran first.
