Shetland Library Opening Hours

Monday & Thursday 9.30 am - 8 pm

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 9.30 am - 5 pm

Community Libraries Opening Hours

Baltasound Community Library (in the school hall): Open on Wednesday evenings from 6 pm - 9 pm

Brae High School Library:  Open to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays from 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm (term time only)

Brae Community Office:  Open weekday mornings

Whalsay Community Library: Open on Wednesday evenings from 5 pm - 8 pm.

How to Join

You may join the library, if you are resident or working in Shetland, by completing an application form.  All library members - adults and children can borrow up to 20 items from Shetland Library over a four week period.  This total may include a number of items from any of the following lending collections:

What You May Borrow

20 items of which 8 can be music CDs, 2 can be DVDs, videos or software, 2 can be Open Learning packs.

Open learning packs are loaned for an initial period of three months.

DVDs are loaned for two weeks only.

Books

Fiction, non fiction, large print and talking books may be borrowed by members of the library.

Fiction Material

This is arranged alphabetically by authors' surnames.

Non Fiction Material

This is arranged by subject and classified using the Dewey Decimal Scheme.  Books of local interest are arranged separately.

Compact Discs

We offer compact discs which cater for a wide range of musical tastes.

Local Collection

This area houses an extensive local collection. The local collection is kept up to date as new publications become available.  Here you can also study our complete set of The Shetland Times and the Shetland News, and some other Shetland periodicals, on microfilm.

Learning Centre

The Learning Centre offers free Internet access and computer facilities, computer books, foreign language courses and DVDs. For more information click here.

Mobile Van Service

Click on the mobile library schedules below to find out when the mobile library will be visiting your area next.  Shetland Library has two mobile vans which travel around the mainland of Shetland and the islands of Yell, Unst, Fetlar, Whalsay and Skerries.  The schedules are also announced daily on BBC Radio Shetland between 5.30 pm and 6 pm.

Other Services

The library provides a range of additional services shown below.  Please ask staff for further information.

  • Housebound readers:  We regularly deliver books to customers who are unable to visit the library in person.

  • Talking Newspaper:  Recorded cassettes of The Shetland Times, Shetland Life and The New Shetlander are made and posted to customers.

  • Requests:  If not in stock or not available, you may request books, talking books, periodicals and open learning packs which will be supplied, at the discretion of the librarian, by reserving, inter library loan or purchase. 

  • Renewals:  Loans may be renewed online, by telephone or during a library visit, if items are not requested by another customer.

  • Photocopies:  These can be made from library materials subject to copyright regulations.  There is a small fee for each page copied.

  • Service to schools:  The library makes special provision to support the work of school teachers and pupils.
